Communication is central to everything we do. Very often when people come to us for a divorce they are consumed by fear or anger and have lost the ability to communicate with their spouses even about their children. There is a difference between "reacting" and "responding". As a first step, we ask them to take off their litigator hats and put on their parent hats.
Children always benefit when parents are communicating and when parents learn how to communicate in a more mature way. I teach them techniques, like bouncing a ball: You have to catch what the other parent said (first) before responding and bouncing the ball back - Attorney Sylvia Woods.
At our law firm, we strongly believe that mediation is often better than litigation as a means of solving family law conflicts. For one reason, divorce in California is so cut and dry it doesn't really assist in the healing process that should take place after a divorce to help people move on with their lives.
