At the law offices of Sylvia Woods in Oakland, California, we serve clients throughout the Bay Area including the cities of Oakland, San Francisco, Berkeley, Hayward, San Leandro, Fremont, Marin, San Mateo, Redwood City, San Jose, Fairfield and Vallejo; and in Alameda County, Marin County, San Francisco County, San Mateo County, Santa Clara County, and Solano County.

Since 1992, the law office of Sylvia Woods has been dedicated to providing quality family law, child support, and child custody legal support and counsel to our clients.

We have a reputation for our dedication and thoroughness that is widely respected as one of the top family law mediation firms in Alameda County for handling child custody and divorce cases.  We specialize in high-conflict cases.

We also represent minors in personal injury cases. We work collaboratively with our clients and take our responsibilities seriously, knowing that the results we achieve for our clients will have lasting impact on their lives.

"Set up is cheaper than clean up". In family law matters it's better to hire a lawyer at the beginning of a case to set it up properly. After that you may be able to manage it with less assistance. "Clean up" cases are much more expensive because once a judge makes orders it's difficult and sometimes impossible to "put the toothpaste back into the tube."

Child custody is based on what is best for the child and since people and circumstances can change, custody of a minor child is never really permanent.

Mothers and Fathers have equal rights under California law when paternity is established. A father's name on the birth certificate alone does not establish legal paternity or custodial rights for the father.

Child support in California is complicated and with often unexpected results. Anyone involved in a child support case should seek legal advice early and often.  Don't expect the court to protect you if you lose  your job or make less money than when child support was set because unless you file a motion to modify you will continue to owe the amount that was ordered until a court orders something else...and you'll owe any unpaid "arrears" with 10% interest!

When a parent is planning to move away more than 30 or 40 miles the way the children's time is shared and their schooling will likely be affected too so don't wait until the move is underway to talk to a lawyer.

Domestic violence issues maybe handled in domestic violence or family law court, but a person may also face criminal charges. Police reports and what you say to others can gravely affect your parental rights and freedom. See a lawyer!

The focus of the divorce and family law practice at our firm is on problem solving and taking the long view.

Our family law attorneys emphasize the importance of communication. We appreciate the unique multi-cultural challenges faced by many families in our wonderfully diverse region.

We work hard to help our family law clients make decisions that are well informed. And we work equally hard to make sure they understand the consequences of their decisions.
